Description An account of the resource The Snow Family House was located on Main Street next to and north of the Sugar Grove Community House on the west side of Main St. It was purchased from Carter Wilson to become the Sugar Grove Library until it was torn down. Previously the Public Library was housed in the Sugar Grove Community House. Additional history regarding the establishment of a library in Sugar Grove Township appears in the account found in "Past and Present of Kane County, Illinois. 1878" on page 416-417: "Two Public Libraries have exercised an important influence in the mental culture of the inhabitants of the township. According to some of the early settlers, sectional jealousy was first introduced through them; but be that as it may, their beneficial effects can scarcely be over estimated. Sectional feeling must have appeared of necessity, as the entire township became settled, and the fact that it was ushered in with the first library should count for naught in a consideration of the value of the library itself. The first one was organized in the winter of 1843, by the farmers resolving themselves into a company of stockholders. Three of them headed the list by purchasing shares to the amount of ten dollars each, and others followed with smaller sums. The books were first kept at the house of S.G. Paull, Section 16, and the collection bore the name of Farmers' Library. The old records show that the books were most industriously read, and additions were occasionally made to their number until, in 1851, there were 264 volumes, embracing valuable works upon a variety of topics. many of them are now in the school house, in District 7. The second library was known as the Independent Farmers' Library, and was established during the Winter following the organization of the first. The family to come west, all that I can do for them I will after getting here, and I think if they are just landed here once that they never would think of old Vermont again. As for the matter of living, it is much easier done than in the State of Vermont. I hope that you will pack up and come in one week after you get this. As for the journey west, I think that the best way for you to come is by water. Come to Whitehall by land and there take a line boat for Buffalo. You can make a bargain much cheaper for a whole family than for one. Board yourselves, and you can come [ ] perhaps on line boat that you can so as well to get boarded. But [ ] your passage through to Buffalo and then by steam boat to Chicago you can come cheaper to board yourselves than board on steam boat. Just put up a lot of [ ] at Buffalo. It won’t be a very pleasant piece of [ ] to the women to move, but it won’t last long. Just say to them that it will be a move for life if they will come, that they never will be sorry. Pack into as small compass as you can. Fetch all that you can and not have it too bulky. When in Chicago, I will meet you and convey you on to home that may ever last, I hope. Sampson Brown and son arrived here about two weeks since, and it only cost them from Vermont to Chicago by waters twenty dollars for both. They boarded themselves [ ] including board and all. He is survived by his wife Ruth of Sugar Grove, Nine children: Clifton G. (Lynne) Frantz of Batavia, Nancy C. Wilkison of Elburn, David S. (Vickie) Frantz of Sugar Grove, Steven J. Frantz of Sandwich, Mark J. (Beth) Randall fo Plain City, OH, David L. (Kathy) Randall of Yorkville, Terry M (Jim) Jensen of Aurora, Jane A. (Ken) Laurie of Elburn and Dwight C. In the background is the south side of Keck's Store and to the far right is the corner of a building that Groff would one day own and become his home and workshop. Groff was a distinguished Sugar Grover, citizen, churchman, an industrious, mechanical genius, and father of Clif, Nancy, Dave and Steve. ~ Rick Johnson 2016 Our ancestors came from Switzerland in the 1740's. They were Menonite and settled in Penn. It was not uncommon to incorporate maiden names of spouses when naming babies when they were born. My Grandfather's name was also Clare Groff Frantz. My Great Grandmother's last name was Groff. It's funny though, my Great Grandfather's name was Benjamin Franklin Frantz, but we couldn't find any record of kite fliers in the family. Title A name given to the resource Kahl and Lorraine Kinney: The West Side Greeters Description An account of the resource TRANSCRIPTION Kahl and Lorraine Kinney sit in their driveway at the intersection of Main Street and Cross Street in Sugar Grove and wave to everyone in town as they drive or walk by. The town of Sugar Grove loves them. They have two sons, David and Daniel. Kahl and Lorraine also have six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. When asked about pets, Lorraine said that Kahl is her pet. They have lived in Sugar Grove since 1987. Kahl and Lorraine used to be tenant farmers on a rented dairy farm. In 1976, they switched to beef and hogs, and say they own their success to “udders.” Kahl likes to do crosswords, play Sudoku, and grow hollyhocks while Lorraine enjoys gardening and baking peanut butter squares. Kahl’s grandfather used to peddle eggs and milk on Main Street. What Lorraine and Kahl enjoy most about Sugar Grove is the people and the surroundings.
