The new Town Hall was build where the Sugar Grove Community Building now stands. By the mid 1920s, the Town Hall was too small for the many activities held there, and it was in disrepair. Title A name given to the resource Old Post Office on Maple Street Description An account of the resource 60 Maple Street, Sugar Grove, IL Until August 8, 1840, mail had to be taken to Naperville, fifteen miles away, and cost 25 cents to mail. A post office was opened in the Thomas Slater home which stood at the northwest corner of Galena and Route 56, where the exit roads are now. Fall of 1847, Marcus White became Postmaster at Grouse, the intersection of Scott and Harter Roads, and Isaac Silas Fitch was Postmaster at Jericho, the corner of Jericho and Mighell Roads. Then in August 1850, Samuel S. Ingham was Postmaster at Winthrop, Galena Blvd and Densmore Roads. By the late 1880s, the Post Office at Winthrop had been moved to Main Street near the railroad and all but the Grouse Post Office had been closed. Ralph Hartman was a station agent and postman when the Post Office was in the Sugar Grove Train Depot. The Sugar Grove Depot was removed in the 1970s. The familiar little red building had had the distinction of being the only depot on the Burlington Railroad to serve as both a train station and US Post Office. For decades, mail was picked up and dropped off in Sugar Grove by way of the Railway Post Office car, a common part of the passenger trains at one time. The station master would hang the canvas bag of out-going mail from a "crane", which was a hook on an arm suspended from a post along the tracks. In Sugar Grove, this apparatus was located on the railroad right-of-way adjacent to the West Hotel. The mail handler inside the rain car used a hook to grab the bag from the post as the train sped through town. The mail was sorted by mail handlers inside the train car, and later dropped off at the appropriate town, In-coming mail was imply thrown from the open door of the Railway post office car, and shortly after picked up by the station aster. There were only a few times in Sugar Grove when the bag got beneath the wheels of the speeding train, leaving the mail bag and mail in shreds. AmTrak did away with the mail sorters and since have carried only sorted bags of mail to their destinations. With the U.S. Post Office occupying a portion of the train depot in Sugar Grove, it was always the center of social gathering as the farmers came to town on their noon break to retrieve their mail and were joined by those who lived in the village. In the winter the farmers would gather around the huge pot belly stove in the center of the waiting area and catch up on the news. In warmer weather, they congregated outside the depot. The sound of the telegraph key could always be hear above their voices. It was situated on the desk which occupied the windowed area towards he tracks, and was the only direct means of communication at that time, between the stations and subsequently the train crews. Flags were used periodically to tell and passenger on a passing train about a message that had forwarded by way of the telegraph. Knudson, Practical Horse-Shoeing, General Repair Work in Wood and Iron." The building at 214 South Main Street was known as Cooper’s Hall. It included the Cooper & Needham Blacksmithing Shop (also known as the Knudson Hall and Blacksmith Shop) downstairs. Upstairs, school and town activities took place on the 2nd floor, which included a basketball court, dining room, and stage. The court was so narrow that the folks on the one bench on each side had to stand up on the bench to keep their feet off the playing floor. Title A name given to the resource Valley View School / Denny Standard School Description An account of the resource 145 Calkins Dr., Sugar Grove, IL In 1865, this school was originally built at the top of the hill near 41W455 Denny Rd. It was built just east of an old log house school that was previously located near the corner of Denny and Bliss Rd. This school became known as the Valley View School or Denny Standard School. This was to become the one room school with the longest history of any in Sugar Grove Township. The building site was leased to the school for 99 years with the stipulation that the property return to the original form when it was no longer used for school purposes. It was deemed that if the school was used for teachers' dwelling, the "school purpose" would be satisfied. So it was that James and Maxie Todd moved there in 1949. The building was moved to 145 Calkins Dr. in Sugar Grove, Illinois in 1952 and was occupied by James and Maxie Todd until 1956 when James left the school system. It is currently a private residence. Before the Valley View School was built, Mr. H.B. Densmore helped build a log house in a hollow not far from the corner of Denny Road and Bliss Road and afterward taught there for a time. The year was 1836. A few years later when it was learned that a teacher had small pox, she was confined there till her death. The building was burned, and the Valley View School was built just east of there. Main St. Sugar Grove, IL The first fire station was built on a lot donated by Teresa Keck, widow of William Keck, at 220 Main Street, Sugar Grove, Illinois. At first, all fire calls were answered on phones in Keck's Store as well as tht echief's and the assistant chief's homes. A siren on the roof of the original fire house alerted the volunteers, along with an alarm in each volunteers' home. Each fireman had a fellow volunteer to call when an alarm went out. Radios were not installed in the trucks until 1958. After moving north in 1973 to a new station at 61 Main Street, pagers were installed in firemen's homes, as well as with the Aurora Fire Department. In August of 1978, the emergency "911" number became the Fire Call Number. 2006 was the move to a four bay station on Municipal Drive.
