<text>The first prototype for the Hall Braille Writer was conceived by Frank Hall, Superintendent of the Illinois School for the Blind in 1892. It was created by a local gunsmith and machinist, Gustave Seiber. Hall took the prototype to the Munson Typewriter Company in Chicago, where Superintendent T.B. Harrison and designer Samuel J Seifried created six pilot models, delivering them to Hall on May 27th, 1892. Munson Typewriter also made an additional lot of 94 machines for Hall. Harrison and Seifried soon left Munson and began manufacturing the braillewriter full time, along with the Hall Stereotyper and later a tactile mapmaking machine. When the partnership dissolved, Samuel Seifried continued the business until his death in 1912. The Cooper Manufacturing Company took over the braillewriter. When M.B. Skinner bought Cooper in 1921, the Hall Braille Writer was redesigned and continued to be sold until Cooper sold the design, dies, and tools to the American Foundation for the Blind around 1930. AFB assembled a few additional machines from parts in stock, but at the same time was developing its own machine, the Foundation Writer.

Hopefully, someone in Sugar Grove can remember the family and add more information. I'm glad the photos have a home - the original album was in tatters and there was no protection for the photos if left in that old album I had to put them into protective plastic pockets.

Dear Ruth Frantz,

I thought you would like to know:

Ashe Road was named after the Ashe Family who owned a farm on that Road. The Ashe name ends with an "e". I'm sorry we don't have much history to pass on to you.

Hopefully, someone in Sugar Grove can remember the family and add more information. I'm glad the photos have a home - the original album was in tatters and there was no protection for the photos if left in that old album I had to put them into protective plastic pockets.

"The Sugar Grove Public Library began in 1962 with a donation of slightly under 500 books, and became a public tax supported institution in 1963. The first fully operational Library opened in 1980 in a 6,600 square foot facility. Due to a growing population and the need for space, updated facilities, emerging technology and desires for programming and civic space, voters voted YES for a new facility which opened in the current location at 125 South Municipal Drive in 2009."

"The Library was previously housed in the current Township building and briefly in the Community House."

"Sugar Grove Public Library, a 27,400 square foot library building, replaces a 6,600 square foot facility to better serve the population of Sugar Grove and parts of neighboring Montgomery and North Aurora. This facility is planned to serve the needs of this growing community for the next 10 to 15 years, with commensurate increases in collections, services, and programs. The library site is large enough to accommodate an additional 35,000 square feet of future expansion."

"The architectural concept of Sugar Grove Public Library was derived from a public desire to reflect the rural roots of the community, rather than importing a vernacular design. Working together with the community and key library administrators, Cordogan, Clark and Associates and Leo A. Daly, the library design consultant for this project, analyzed several of the area's historic public buildings and farmhouses to distill an architectural vocabulary that most residents agree is appropriate and uniquely Sugar Grove. Architectural design, detailing, and materials create the sense that this building has long been a part of the community."

GYMNASIUM

"Remember the gym in the classic movie Hoosiers? We’ve got our own. In fact, ours was also built in the 1920s and has been home to generations of athletes. Take a trip down memory lane for pick-up basketball, dodgeball, and other games, as well as to work on your game with youth practices and to host karate tournaments, fitness and exercise classes and more."

"Our gym is also a winner for non-athletic events. With a stage and a movie screen, it’s a great venue to show a movie and perform plays and live music. Clothing re-sales, health fairs, and rummage sales have also found a home in our gym in recent years."

KITCHEN

"Whatever your occasion, our kitchen will allow you to prepare a wonderful meal for your event or organize what you’re serving from a caterer."
