Description An account of the resource Handwritten note on the sketch indicates: The barn sketched in the drawing is believed to have contained logs from one of the first log cabins in Sugar Grove Township, which had been on the north side of Blackberry Creek in what became the T. & A. Judd Farm (Sec. 9, Sugar Grove Township), and which is now in the area of Bliss Woods Forest Preserve. The barn in the sketch was located on Galena Blvd., 1/2 mile east of Illinois Route 47 on the north side in the area that is now Windsor Pointe East Subdivision. The barn was located on the Dexter C. Title A name given to the resource Valley View School / Denny Standard School Description An account of the resource 145 Calkins Dr., Sugar Grove, IL In 1865, this school was originally built at the top of the hill near 41W455 Denny Rd. It was built just east of an old log house school that was previously located near the corner of Denny and Bliss Rd. This school became known as the Valley View School or Denny Standard School. This was to become the one room school with the longest history of any in Sugar Grove Township. The building site was leased to the school for 99 years with the stipulation that the property return to the original form when it was no longer used for school purposes. It was deemed that if the school was used for teachers' dwelling, the "school purpose" would be satisfied. So it was that James and Maxie Todd moved there in 1949. The building was moved to 145 Calkins Dr. in Sugar Grove, Illinois in 1952 and was occupied by James and Maxie Todd until 1956 when James left the school system. It is currently a private residence. Before the Valley View School was built, Mr. H.B. Densmore helped build a log house in a hollow not far from the corner of Denny Road and Bliss Road and afterward taught there for a time. The year was 1836. A few years later when it was learned that a teacher had small pox, she was confined there till her death. The building was burned, and the Valley View School was built just east of there. Main St. Sugar Grove, IL The first fire station was built on a lot donated by Teresa Keck, widow of William Keck, at 220 Main Street, Sugar Grove, Illinois. At first, all fire calls were answered on phones in Keck's Store as well as tht echief's and the assistant chief's homes. A siren on the roof of the original fire house alerted the volunteers, along with an alarm in each volunteers' home. Each fireman had a fellow volunteer to call when an alarm went out. Radios were not installed in the trucks until 1958. After moving north in 1973 to a new station at 61 Main Street, pagers were installed in firemen's homes, as well as with the Aurora Fire Department. In August of 1978, the emergency "911" number became the Fire Call Number. 2006 was the move to a four bay station on Municipal Drive.
