<text>Newsletter Article 2019
Troop 41 was established in 1949 and has 70 years of history partnering with the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, working with youth, and serving the Sugar Grove Community.

To commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Troop 41, Scouts from the past and present gathered together for personal interviews and fireside chats to tell their stories.

Their stories begin with the history of Sugar Grove and the Sugar Grove Community Building that Troop 41 has called home since 1949. They recount favorite memories of adventures, misadventures, campouts, and special projects. Then Scouts from the past pass on their words of wisdom and encouragement to the younger and future scouts.
Our Chaplain and previous Scoutmaster Dave Seraphin observed that while the Scouts from the past told their stories, they turned back into 12-year old boys right in front of his eyes.

Here are the stories from the Scouts in their own words.

<text>The Sugar Grove Center School was built in the fall of 1848. It was a two story building on the east side of Main Street about where the street now ends near the present Route 30. The first floor was school rooms and the second floor was a large meeting room known as the Town Hall or Town House.

History records that on the afternoon of November 10, 1873, the building burned to the ground as the result of some pranks by young boys.

In January 1875, a special town meeting was called to decide where to build a new Town Hall. The Normal and Industrial School was built that year, and the new Town Hall was just north of it, where the Community House now stands.

By the mid 1920s, the Town Hall was to small for many activities held there and it was in disrepair. It was sold and moved to 158 Maple Street and remodeled into a home.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

The older photo of Clare Groff Frantz was from May, 22,1937 when he posed behind the Hotel West. In the background is the south side of Keck's Store and to the far right is the corner of a building that Groff would one day own and become his home and workshop. Groff was a distinguished Sugar Grover, citizen, churchman, an industrious, mechanical genius, and father of Clif, Nancy, Dave and Steve.

Our ancestors came from Switzerland in the 1740's. They were Menonite and settled in Penn. It was not uncommon to incorporate maiden names of spouses when naming babies when they were born. My Grandfather's name was also Clare Groff Frantz. My Great Grandmother's last name was Groff. It's funny though, my Great Grandfather's name was Benjamin Franklin Frantz, but we couldn't find any record of kite fliers in the family. To bad it would have been a great story.
