ADDITIONAL NOTES:

The older photo of Clare Groff Frantz was from May, 22,1937 when he posed behind the Hotel West. In the background is the south side of Keck's Store and to the far right is the corner of a building that Groff would one day own and become his home and workshop. Groff was a distinguished Sugar Grover, citizen, churchman, an industrious, mechanical genius, and father of Clif, Nancy, Dave and Steve.

Our ancestors came from Switzerland in the 1740's. They were Menonite and settled in Penn. It was not uncommon to incorporate maiden names of spouses when naming babies when they were born. My Grandfather's name was also Clare Groff Frantz. My Great Grandmother's last name was Groff. It's funny though, my Great Grandfather's name was Benjamin Franklin Frantz, but we couldn't find any record of kite fliers in the family. To bad it would have been a great story.

Kahl and Lorraine Kinney sit in their driveway at the intersection of Main Street and Cross Street in Sugar Grove and wave to everyone in town as they drive or walk by. The town of Sugar Grove loves them. They have two sons, David and Daniel. Kahl and Lorraine also have six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. When asked about pets, Lorraine said that Kahl is her pet. They have lived in Sugar Grove since 1987. Kahl and Lorraine used to be tenant farmers on a rented dairy farm. In 1976, they switched to beef and hogs, and say they own their success to “udders.” Kahl likes to do crosswords, play Sudoku, and grow hollyhocks while Lorraine enjoys gardening and baking peanut butter squares. Kahl’s grandfather used to peddle eggs and milk on Main Street. What Lorraine and Kahl enjoy most about Sugar Grove is the people and the surroundings.

Dear Folks:

Are the oats all cut yet? When are you going to thrash? Is everything all right out at the playhouse? Is Albert home from Aurora yet? I suppose he had a fine time. Is Verne Eby still with you? How is little Margaret?

Grandma directs all of Uncle Percy’s mail to the County Clerk’s Office. Grandpa sent me a book of Colorado scenes, too.

I am very much about the new books and know that I shall enjoy them very much when I come home. Are they poetry or prose or mixed?

I was extremely pleased to get a letter from Stanton and I will write one all to his own little self soon.

I have written letters to Grandma M. and Flossie and sent cards to Miss Dalrymple, Maver, Mary and Nellie, besides those to the boys. Flossie has sent me a card and so has Mary. Also Miss Dalrymple, and Grandma M. sent me a letter.

I have a new piece. It is a Kulan Sonatina. A Sonatina is an easy Sonata, and a Sonata is the hardest kind of a piece there is. It is the first piece of classical music I have ever had, and Miss Paul says I ought to be proud that I have done so well. She says I am a worker (which is the first time that remark was ever made of me). Miss Paul is on her vacation now so I will probably go to Schoolcraft next week.

Sunday, Uncle Herman and I went over to Diamond Lake and took the steamer trip around. It looks much the same as it did three years ago.

Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Carr and Mrs. Bessie Carr Hill called. Mrs. Hill wished to be remembered to you and said she wished she could see you.

Yesterday was the hottest day of the season; the thermometer at 90 degrees at noon. We had quite a storm this morning.

Well, goodbye with love to all,

Mildred Mighell
