OBITUARY
William Keck Obituary
William Francis "Bill" Keck, 84, of Sugar Grove, Illinois, died peacefully in Downers Grove, IL on December 12, 2023. He was born in Aurora, Illinois, on August 15, 1939, to the late Elizabeth "Sis" Keck and William "Spiv" Keck.

Bill is survived by his sister Elaine (Keck) Fox, nieces Marcia (Nick) Nickeas and Jennifer Fox, and great-nieces Allison and Katherine Nickeas. He is also survived by his close personal friends, Greg and Lisa Meyers.

After graduating from Elburn High School, Bill earned his bachelor's degree in business from the University of Notre Dame and a master's in accounting from Northern Illinois University. Following his studies, he became a Certified Public Accountant in 1972.

Active in the Republican Party throughout his life, Bill had a successful career as the Kane County Auditor for 20 years. He was highly respected for his professionalism and dedication to his work.

Bill was a devout St. Gall Catholic Church member, where he worshipped and found solace. He cherished the community and the spiritual guidance he received. At St. Gall, Bill was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the finance committee, and a lector.

Throughout his life, Bill enjoyed being involved in various organizations and hobbies. He served on the Sugar Grove Cemetery Board, the Lions Club, the Sugar Grove Fire Department Board of Trustees, the Sugar Grove Historical Society, the Illinois Association of County Auditors, the Kane County Farm Board of Directors, and the Dominick’s Club. These organizations allowed Bill to impact the community positively and meet like-minded individuals who shared his interests.

The Keck family has a long history in Sugar Grove and has owned and managed multiple properties, including the town grocery store and “The Old Hotel.” Bill continued to manage the remaining properties until his passing.

A visitation will be held on December 19, 2023 from 2 pm to 7 pm at The Healy Chapel Sugar Grove, 370 Division Dr., Sugar Grove, IL 60554. The funeral Mass will occur on December 20, 2023 at 12:30 pm at St. Gall Catholic Church, 43W885 Hughes Rd., Elburn, IL 60119.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Gall’s in Bill’s memory.

The family would like to thank Healy Chapel for their assistance during this difficult time.

Bill will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His warmth, kindness, and dedication to his community will always be remembered. May he rest in peace.

Retired Kane Auditor Bill Keck dies at 84

Michael Kenyon: ‘I would say he did not have a mean bone in his body’

By Brenda Schory

SUGAR GROVE – William “Bill” Keck, who had served as Kane County Auditor for 20 years, died Dec. 12. He was 84, according to his obituary notice at The Healy Chapel in Sugar Grove.

A Sugar Grove resident and lifelong Republican, Keck was a five-term auditor from 1992 to 2012, when he decided not to seek re-election.

“He was great to know and a good example for public service,” said Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham. “He did his job. He did it well and had the respect of all of us. He was a great public servant and a joy to work with. … He was a gentle, compassionate person, too.”

Keck briefly came out of retirement in 2013 to announce a run for the Illinois 50th House District after then State Rep. Kay Hatcher did not seek re-election.

At the time, he called himself “a voice for fiscal responsibility.”

“I understand county operations,” Keck had said then. “I’d have to translate that to state operations. I am concerned that we have crisis problems. I am one person, but if I can make a difference, I’d like to try.”

Keck was in a field of four GOP hopefuls in the 2014 primary, which was won by Keith Wheeler.

Keck also served on the Kane County Farm Bureau Board with County Board member Michael Kenyon, R-South Elgin.

“Bill Keck was a kind, nice man,” Kenyon said. “He didn’t cause harm to anybody. He just did his job, didn’t bother anybody else and he was on the Farm Bureau Board. We appreciated his knowledge of numbers. … I would say he did not have a mean bone in his body.”

Kenyon, the only actual farmer serving on the County Board, said Keck was not a farmer, but had inherited a little acreage with his sister.

Keck’s funeral Mass will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Gall Catholic Church, 43W885 Hughes Rd., Elburn. Keck was a parishioner at St. Gall, and a member of Knights Columbus, of the church’s finance committee and a lector, according to his obituary notice.
