If you have made up your mind to leave for good, all that I can say is just pack up and move if you can persuade the family. The family to come west, all that I can do for them I will after getting here, and I think if they are just landed here once that they never would think of old Vermont again. As for the matter of living, it is much easier done than in the State of Vermont. I hope that you will pack up and come in one week after you get this. As for the journey west, I think that the best way for you to come is by water. Come to Whitehall by land and there take a line boat for Buffalo. You can make a bargain much cheaper for a whole family than for one. Board yourselves, and you can come [ ] perhaps on line boat that you can so as well to get boarded. But [ ] your passage through to Buffalo and then by steam boat to Chicago you can come cheaper to board yourselves than board on steam boat. Just put up a lot of [ ] at Buffalo. It won’t be a very pleasant piece of [ ] to the women to move, but it won’t last long. Just say to them that it will be a move for life if they will come, that they never will be sorry. Pack into as small compass as you can. Fetch all that you can and not have it too bulky. When in Chicago, I will meet you and convey you on to home that may ever last, I hope. Sampson Brown and son arrived here about two weeks since, and it only cost them from Vermont to Chicago by waters twenty dollars for both. They boarded themselves [ ] including board and all. Description An account of the resource The Snow Family House was located on Main Street next to and north of the Sugar Grove Community House on the west side of Main St. It was purchased from Carter Wilson to become the Sugar Grove Library until it was torn down. Previously the Public Library was housed in the Sugar Grove Community House. Additional history regarding the establishment of a library in Sugar Grove Township appears in the account found in "Past and Present of Kane County, Illinois. 1878" on page 416-417: "Two Public Libraries have exercised an important influence in the mental culture of the inhabitants of the township. According to some of the early settlers, sectional jealousy was first introduced through them; but be that as it may, their beneficial effects can scarcely be over estimated. Sectional feeling must have appeared of necessity, as the entire township became settled, and the fact that it was ushered in with the first library should count for naught in a consideration of the value of the library itself. The first one was organized in the winter of 1843, by the farmers resolving themselves into a company of stockholders. Three of them headed the list by purchasing shares to the amount of ten dollars each, and others followed with smaller sums. The books were first kept at the house of S.G. Paull, Section 16, and the collection bore the name of Farmers' Library. The old records show that the books were most industriously read, and additions were occasionally made to their number until, in 1851, there were 264 volumes, embracing valuable works upon a variety of topics. many of them are now in the school house, in District 7. The second library was known as the Independent Farmers' Library, and was established during the Winter following the organization of the first. Hall: Portrait Collection Description An account of the resource Frank Haven Hall: Born February 9, 1841. Died January 3, 1911. Frank H. Hall (Frank Haven Hall) was the Superintendent of West Aurora Schools when he was approached by a group of men from Sugar Grove about taking charge of a new school there. Thomas Judd, Henry Chapman, Silas Reynolds, Leonard Benjamin, and Lewis Gillette asked Frank Hall to take charge and teach in the school. Thomas Judd had for some years favored the idea of an industrial school which would teach agriculture as well as preparatory to going on to other vocations. Frank Hall agreed and his salary was to be $500 per year. An all day picnic was held in the maple grove on the Judd Farm on Tuesday May 28, 1875, with the announced purpose of discussing plans for the new school. History records that 1,000 people attended and all were seated at a table of 168 feet long, and enjoyed a find meal. The dinner was followed by a program and speakers. One of the speakers was Professor Hall, and at the close of his speech, he called for donations. It took just 15 minutes to collect $1,400.00, plus subscriptions that brought that total to $2,200.00. Subsequent subscriptions and the district tax, swelled the fund to $4,500.00. Mr. Judd donated the land where the apartment house now stands across from the Methodist Church. The school and a horse shed to accommodate 80 horses was build and the Sugar Grove Normal and Industrial School opened for classes in the fall of 1875. The average attendance for the first year was 100, of which about 25 were local students. The curriculum at that time included Latin, General History, natural Philosophy, Grammar, Elements of Agricultural Science, Geometry, Bookkeeping, Arithmetic, English Literature and Music. A teaching certificate was one requirement of being awarded a Certificate of Graduation. Frank Hall left Sugar Grove School in 1887, and later served as Superintendent of the Illinois Institution for the Blind at Jacksonville, Illinois. Among his accomplishments was the invention of the Braille typewriter, also called the Braillewriter or Brailler in 1892, and the stereotype-maker machine, both of which were widely used by the blind throughout the world. Route 47 and Galena Boulevard Description An account of the resource Introduction The Village of Sugar Grove, Illinois is located west of Chicago in the rapidly expanding I-88 Corridor. This region continues to exhibit significant growth and demand for new housing construction and, subsequently, for the retail, commercial and recreational development that follows such housing growth. The 2005 Sugar Grove Comprehensive Plan Update identifies three distinct areas for Town Center commercial development. These areas include: 1. The Village’s traditional downtown area along Main Street. 2. The Promenade, a southern extension of the downtown along the west side of Illinois Route 47 immediately south of the existing downtown and Prairie Street. 3. The Special Development District (SDD), a 243 acre area bound by IL. Route 56, IL. Route 47 and Galena Boulevard planned for mixed use development with an entertainment focus. This area is the focus of this Feasibility Study. As this location map indicates, the SDD has excellent regional access. With this access comes the potential for a mixed use development including retail, entertainment, recreational, and multi-family residential uses. Some preliminary interest has been expressed by the development community. To properly assess the potential of this area, its relationship to other areas of Sugar Grove, and the municipal planning and development tools which would be necessary to pursue identified potential, the Village of Sugar Grove has commissioned this feasibility study. Description An account of the resource The plaque on the large granite stone reads: "BOLSTER. This hitching rock was recovered from the field and moved by two yoke of oxen and stoneboat to the cabin of Artemus Bolster who homesteaded Indian Land in 1844 on Wheeler Road. Seven generations of the family have lived at that site until it was taken by the Aurora Airport. Lyle Bolster and Charles Bolster 1994." The Hitching Rock is located in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.
